The company announced plans to optimize the operating system for devices with only 8 GB of RAM, while also promising faster boot times and improved responsiveness for Windows Hello.
Corporate Vice President for Windows and Devices Mark Linton shared the details during an Acer presentation at the IFA 2026 trade show. He stated that Microsoft continues to refine fundamental system components and has already achieved noticeable progress, although no concrete figures, release dates, or benchmark results were provided.
The work is being conducted under the internal Windows 11 K2 initiative. This program covers acceleration of File Explorer and search, reduction of update-related crashes, overall performance gains, and expanded interface customization options. Microsoft also plans to restore the ability to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen.
Optimizations for 8 GB RAM configurations are especially relevant as Windows incorporates more artificial intelligence features that require additional resources.
