Samara University Study Shows Social Ties Maintain Order in Minecraft Virtual Cities
Researchers at Samara University have examined how player-run cities inside the game Minecraft manage to maintain order without strict laws or dedicated enforcement bodies. The study, led by researcher Olga Udalova, combined eight in-depth interviews with virtual mayors and a survey of 246 players across several communities.
Findings indicate that the stability of these virtual settlements depends primarily on the density of social connections rather than on formal rulebooks. While some cities maintain detailed written regulations, others follow an extremely concise approach: laws are essentially absent provided players behave reasonably. Instead of police forces or courts, order is upheld through personal acquaintances, mutual assistance, reputation, and the informal authority of the mayor.
Conflicts are typically settled through direct negotiation, and any damage is compensated voluntarily. A striking case is Boostergrad, a community of 117 residents classified by the researcher as semi-anarchic. Local rules formally allow griefing and appropriation of other players’ property, yet residents rarely exercise this freedom. In one incident a player accidentally destroyed another resident’s loot and, without any external pressure, paid the owner 2000 units of in-game currency. The motivation was reputational: acquiring a negative reputation proved more costly than the voluntary compensation.
The research concludes that in the examined Minecraft cities, social order rests on trust and interpersonal networks. A poor reputation complicates trade, communication, and joint projects while also deterring potential new residents from joining the community.
