Putin Calls Rumors of Russian Bank Deposit Freeze 'Stupid Fakes'
President of Russia Vladimir Putin described rumors about a possible freeze on bank deposits of Russian citizens as rather stupid fakes. He made this statement on September 3 during the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum.
According to the head of state, there are no grounds for such fears. As an example, Putin recalled 2022, when amid anxious sentiments citizens massively went to banks to withdraw money. The financial system did not close the cash desks at that time: depositors calmly received all requested funds.
"These are just some fakes, by the way — rather stupid ones," the president stressed.
Against this background, Russians not only continue to keep money in the financial system but are also more actively bringing it to the stock market. According to the Central Bank of Russia, the net inflow of funds to brokerage accounts of private investors in the second quarter of 2026 exceeded 1 trillion rubles. This is 19% more than the result of the previous quarter and a record since the beginning of observations in 2021.
Thus, rumors about an imminent blocking of savings so far look exactly like an attempt to shake depositors well, but without facts and brakes.
